Hebrews 5:1-10 - For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness. 3 Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people. 4 No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father, 6 also says in another place,
You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. 7 During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. 9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Pontifex – A word used in ancient Rome to describe priests. In the original Latin, it speaks of one who builds bridges.

2 Corinthians 5:19 - God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them
5:6 - also says in another place, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek
1. Kingly Priest – Ruler of Salem (Peace)
2. Eternal Priest – Believed to have no beginning and no end
Isaiah 9:7 - Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

“He learned” – manthano – to gain knowledge or skills through study, practice, and experience
“Made perfect” – telios – Completing the task for which it is purposed
N.T. Wright – “The God who is the father of Jesus is the God who made the world in the first place, and he remains deeply committed to his creation, even though it has become wayward and corrupt. If Jesus is to be his son, he must learn what this creation business is about, what it will take to rescue it from the mess it has got itself into. He must get to know its depths as well as its heights. He must learn what it means to be his father’s obedient son; and that will mean suffering, not because God is a sadist who simply wants to see his dear son having a rough time of it, but because the world which God made and loves is a dark and wicked place and the son must suffer its sorrow and pain in order to rescue it.”
5:9 - After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey
